Schotia Safaris

Found in: Eastern Cape, Game / Nature Reserves, Honeymoon Destinations, Paterson, Safari Lodges, The Western Region

Schotia Safaris is the oldest private game viewing reserve in the Eastern Cape, bordering the eastern side of Addo Elephant National Park.

This malaria free reserve is probably the most densely stocked reserve in Africa, and with over 40 mammal species and approximately 2000 animals, can offer consistently good game viewing throughout the year. Schotia was the first reserve in the Cape Province to have free roaming lions and we can almost guarantee sightings of these magnificent animals on every
Tooth & Claw game drive.

The reserve is owned, managed and run ‘hands on’ by the owners, the Bean family, who are now in their sixth generation and have owned the original farm, Orlando, since the early 1800’s. After nearly 25 years of experience in the safari business, Peter and his team have created a unique, relaxed and truly South African experience at Schotia.

Schotia has a huge open air lapa, reputedly among the largest in South Africa. It has reed and sneezewood walls and is open to the African skies, except for the outer ring where a traditionally thatched roof covers the dining tables and bar area. Inside the lapa there are several large ‘Schotia’ trees and a roaring log fire. Dinner is usually a mix of safari cuisine and traditional South African cooking; the exact menu depends on what is available on the day.

Just a short drive from Port Elizabeth, Addo or Grahamstown, don’t miss the unique experience that is Schotia Safaris.

We believe recommendations and return bookings are more important than stars on our walls, and look forward to welcoming you for a comfortable stay in our beautiful reserve.

For a real ‘African’ feel, try one of our three themed bush lodges - one is a ‘family’ lodge, with two bunk-beds and a double bed, the other two are honeymoon style doubles. Set within dense subtropical thicket these rustic-brick and thatch lodges have the comforts you would expect of a top class reserve - en suite shower/bathroom with running hot and cold water, coffee/tea making facilities and a real fire to welcome you on colder evenings.

What they do lack is the trappings of the modern world - satellite TV, 24 hour room service and electricity (don’t worry - we can still charge cameras and batteries for you)! Lamps will be lit for you in the evening and the rooms are serviced daily.

For those who would prefer electricity, we now have eight rooms available in Orlando Lodge, a converted dairy within the original farm’s homestead.

The rooms have a double bed (although two of the rooms can be in a two-single-bed format), ceiling fan for warmer evenings and electric blanket in the bed to keep you cosy on a cold winter’s night. The rooms are also equipped with tea and coffee facilities, an en-suite shower and wash basin. Each row of four rooms shares a toilet.
